At 7:55 PM (PST) the Riverside County Sheriff's Office (RSO) announced that Darnell Calhoun, a 30-year-old deputy, had died after being shot in the line of duty, while responding to a domestic violence call. Deputy Calhoun was transported to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Deputy Calhoun leaves behind an expectant wife and two sons (aged two and four).
Deputy Calhoun was the first Deputy to arrive on the scene and when his backup arrived, he was discovered to be wounded in the street. The responding backup Deputy engaged in a shootout with the suspect and wounded him, arresting him on the spot.
According to a Press Release from the RSO's Sergeant Deidre Vickers, Deputy Calhoun had just joined the RSO February 24, 2022, after spending two years with the San Diego Police Department. Stationed at Lake Elsinore Station, most recently been assigned to Lake Elsinore Station
